A pair of 440g cotton shorts and a pair of 140g mesh training shorts can both be made for the gym. Wear them through the same session, however, and they will feel completely different.
The heavyweight pair will feel structured, solid and substantial. The lightweight pair will feel cooler, less restrictive and easier to forget about once the pace increases.
That does not make one better than the other.
Fabric weight affects how gymwear hangs, how quickly it heats up, how it handles sweat and where it fits into your training. The right choice depends on the session you have planned, the conditions around you and how you prefer your clothing to feel.
Fabric weight is usually measured in GSM, or grams per square metre.
GSM measures the weight of the fabric itself. It does not tell you the total weight of the completed garment, and it should not be treated as a simple quality rating.
A higher GSM usually means a denser, more substantial fabric. A lower GSM generally means a lighter material with less bulk.
However, the number alone does not tell the full story.
The final feel of a garment also depends on:
The fibre used
The way the fabric is knitted or woven
Whether it has been brushed, washed or treated
The amount of stretch
The cut of the garment
Linings, panels, trims and reinforcements
A 275g cotton T-shirt, for example, may feel firm and structured. A stretch fabric at a similar weight may sit much closer to the body and move in a completely different way.
GSM is useful because it gives you an indication of substance. It should always be considered alongside the fabric composition and the purpose of the garment.
Heavyweight gymwear is built around structure.
Dense cotton, fleece and sweat fabrics tend to hang more cleanly, retain their shape and provide greater coverage than very light materials. They are often used for oversized T-shirts, hoodies, sweat shorts and joggers.
